The Institute and its leadership are advised by a Scientific Advisory Board, a Strategic Advisory Board, and an Educational Advisory Board, and overseen by a University Oversight Board. The members of each board are listed on our People page.
Scientific Advisory Board
The Scientific Advisory Board provides independent guidance to ensure that ICARM advances its mission to support the use of new technologies for mathematical reasoning. The board's responsibility is to advise the Director and Associate Directors on the scientific direction, scope, and quality of ICARM's programs and resources.
The Scientific Advisory Board:
- Recommends themes, organizers, and participants for the Institute's workshops, summer schools, and meetings.
- Evaluates and advises on proposals for collaborative research visits and other scientific activities of the Institute.
- Provides feedback on the Institute's innovation engineer program, including alignment of technical support with the needs of the mathematical sciences community.
- Assesses the balance of the Institute's activities across formalization, automated reasoning, machine learning for mathematics, and applications in pure and applied mathematics.
- Assesses the Institute's technical infrastructure, including software, documentation, and community resources.
- Reviews outcomes of the Institute's scientific programs and recommends adjustments or new directions as the field evolves.
- Recommends candidates for Director and Associate Director positions to the University Oversight Board as necessary.
Meetings and reporting: The Scientific Advisory Board meets with Institute leadership twice annually. Before each meeting, the Institute leadership will circulate a report on the Institute's status and recent and planned activities.
Terms: All members serve four-year terms. The Director and Associate Directors of ICARM serve as ex officio members.
Educational Advisory Board
The Educational Advisory Board advises the Institute on its mission to support mathematics education, particularly regarding the use of new technologies for mathematical reasoning.
The Educational Advisory Board:
- Evaluates and provides advice on the Institute's educational programs, including summer schools for PhD students and college students, and programs for high school students.
- Evaluates and provides advice on the Institute's development, curation, and support of educational materials.
- Recommends themes, organizers, and participants for the Institute's workshops, summer schools, and meetings having to do with mathematics education.
Since these activities are limited during the Institute's initial three-year pilot launch, the Institute will initially have a small Educational Advisory Board as it looks forward to future expansion into these areas. Rather than hold a separate meeting, members of the Educational Advisory Board will join one of the other advisory board meetings.
Strategic Advisory Board
The Strategic Advisory Board ensures that the Institute remains ambitious, forward-looking, and responsive to the broader mathematical and scientific community. The Strategic Advisory Board provides strategic counsel, strengthens governance, and connects the Institute to external partners and resources.
The Strategic Advisory Board:
- Collaborates with the Institute leadership to articulate long-term vision and administrative policies.
- Provides advice on the operation and management of the Institute, including evaluation of priorities and opportunities.
- Serves as a bridge to the external community, forges connections with foundations, industry, and philanthropy, and assists with advancement and fundraising efforts.
- Helps position the Institute as a national and international leader in supporting mathematics with reasoning technology.
- Recommends candidates for Director and Associate Director positions to the University Oversight Board as necessary.
Meetings and reporting: The Institute Directors update the members of the Strategic Advisory Board regularly and arrange individual or group meetings as needed, on an ad-hoc basis.

University Oversight Board
Carnegie Mellon University will provide fiscal and management oversight for the institute. The Institute is overseen by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the University Oversight Board, which consists of the following Carnegie Mellon officials:
- Vice President for Research
- Dean of the School of Computer Science
- Dean of the Mellon College of Science
- Dean of the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences
- Vice Provost for Education
- Director of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center
- Vice Provost for Community, Culture and Engagement
- Senior Associate Vice President for University Advancement
The Director and Associate Directors report to the Vice President for Research.
The University Oversight Board will meet annually to review the Institute's finances and administrative procedures, ensuring the Institute's long-term stability and effectiveness in pursuit of its mission. When necessary, the University Oversight Board is responsible for appointing a new Director or Associate Director, in consultation with the current Institute leadership, the Scientific Advisory Board, and the Strategic Advisory Board. The ICARM Director and Associate Directors serve as ex officio members of the University Oversight Board.
