Code of Conduct
The open exchange of ideas, freedom of thought and expression, and respectful scientific debate are central to ICARM’s mission. Our work depends on a community grounded in mutual respect, intellectual rigor, and merit-based evaluation of ideas and contributions.
This Code applies to all ICARM-sponsored activities—in person, virtual, and on ICARM-operated platforms (e.g., Zulip, GitHub). All participants are expected to abide by it.
Expected Conduct
- Treat all participants with dignity and professional courtesy.
- Engage in good-faith scientific debate; provide constructive feedback.
- Respect differing viewpoints, disciplinary backgrounds, and levels of experience.
- Credit the intellectual contributions of others appropriately.
- Respect confidentiality during talks and collaborative work.
- Use professional names on ICARM platforms; keep all posted content appropriate for an academic setting.
- Respect others’ intellectual property, including code, proofs, and unpublished results.
Additionally, participants in the ICARM Zulip are expected to follow the community guidelines posted in #general > community guidelines.
Prohibited Conduct
- Harassment, bullying, intimidation, or personal attacks.
- Discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
- Sexual harassment, unwelcome sexual attention, stalking, or inappropriate physical contact.
- Sustained disruption of talks, workshops, or other events.
- Retaliation against anyone who reports a concern in good faith.
Reporting
Reports can be made:
- To any ICARM staff member or director.
- By email: conduct@icarm.io (designated conduct officers only).
- To CMU’s Office for Institutional Equity and Title IX.
- To the NSF Office of Equity and Civil Rights.
All reports will be handled with discretion and confidentiality to the extent permitted by law. If you witness a crime, call 911.
Consequences
Violations may result in a warning, removal from an event or platform, a temporary or permanent ban from ICARM activities, or referral to the participant’s home institution or CMU’s conduct processes, as determined by ICARM leadership on a case-by-case basis.
Recording
ICARM may record and disseminate talks and events with speaker permission. Speakers may opt out. ICARM reserves the right to remove any contributed materials.
Applicable Institutional Policies
CMU’s policies on harassment, discrimination, and sexual misconduct apply on CMU’s campus and at CMU-affiliated ICARM activities. At partner institutions, the host’s applicable policies also apply.
This Code draws on the community agreements of AIM, IPAM, ICERM, IAS, and SLMath, and the AMS Policy Statement on Anti-Harassment.
